Can mac computer get viruses? can a linux computer? explain?

Macs and Linux machines are both vulnerable to viruses, and viruses have been written for both. Unlike the above poster thinks, it has very little to do with the popularity of the systems. Under linux, every security vulnerability and every program written that takes advantage of that security vulnerability is called an exploit, or malicious code. Both linux and Mac OSX have a more advanced security design than Windows does, and of the two of them, Mac takes more default security precautions than most linux distributions (Ubuntu is also similarly secure by default on the linux front).

There are people that will waste countless hours debating whether or not Mac OS X and Linux are more secure than Windows. The simple answer is that I've been using Mac OS X since 2005 without a single virus or other piece of malware. No Windows user can say the same. If they do, they're lying out their ***. Linux users would agree. In real world use, there haven't been any Mac OS X viruses, or Linux viruses, as far as I'm aware.

ANY computer can be infected with malicious code, however, Macs and Linux boxes are not as vulnerable as PC's. People who write exploitive code target Microsoft because of one simple reason, nearly 95% of the home computers are using the Microsoft operating system in some variation. If a person wants to effect the most machines with his code, he'll write it for Microsoft. This is only a numbers game. Also, Microsoft has a TON of security leaks in its OS, proof being all the "security updates" you get from them. Want nearly 100% safety from viruses and other bugs? Run Linux. It's your best bet.
