I am assume that you are talking about computers...running Windows.

There are many types of virus/worms that can attack your computer. Most virus are self contained little programs. Usualy with malicious intent. And worms are usualy bits of script written with Microsoft Word or any script editor. Worms usualy do the same, but are easier to transmit via the internet.

The best defence in my oppinion is to have an up to date Virus Scan program i.e. Nortons, McAfee, etc... and a fire wall i.e. Norton, McAfee, Zone Alarm, etc...

And the MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do is update Windows with Microsoft updates. Also you should update Internet Expolrer, all the Microsoft Office software, and any other software that you can update.

Do a search and research programs that can block, stop, and delete virus/worms.

Here are the steps that you should take.

- Try to use the Emergency thing that comes on the Norton 2006 disk. Oh, you didn't buy the disk? Do I have to tell you... you should always buy the disk at a retail store instead of DOWNLOAD it. You see, if your computer is infected, how can you trust a download. Besides, then you would HAVE THE DISK.

- Reboot into SAFE MODE. Then run your Norton Anti-virus scan.

- be sure to uninstall any BOGUS programs that appeared while you were not looking. For security, you should only have trusted programs like SpyBot and Ad-aware.

- Visit the Symantec website at http://www.symantec.com and look for the type of virus that the Anti-virus program says that you have. There should be clear instructions on how to remove that virus.

Maybe you have a really tight firewall setting. Right click on your norton icon (in the bottom right hand corner of your screen) and click on somthing that says 'program settings' or something similar.

All viruses are harmful, in the sense of their way to replicate. You mean beneficial to humans... no for as much as i know they dont exist, theyre dormant at best, quite malignant at worst. Beneficial bacteris such as E. Coli are abundant and life on a marco scale couldnt exist w/o them. But virusues work on a genetic level to alter or arrest the DNA and RNA functions of host cells, quite insidious they are. So as far as I know, beneficial viruses do not exist.

Yes depending on your system. Keep Avast it's the best free Anti Virus protection that I have used to date. still using it.
Depending on the size of your hard disk - yes this is normal. It does search every file on your computer - something most other AV's don't do. Trust Avast - it will warn you if a virus is trying to gain entry. I've had Avast for 5 years and never had a virus get past it.

I would HIGHLY recommend AVG anti virus . These days all people know of an anti virus is either Mcafee or Norton . The virus makers , hackers , malware creators , spy wares etc all target the most popular pieces of software so that they have the best chance of a hit. Everybody knows of Norton and mcafee so there will be many viruses made to hide from them . But if you use a not so popular anti virus then you will have a much less chance of an attack. Depends what you mean by "as deadly". I would say that the death rate from HIV is as high or higher. It just occurs over a longer period of time.

Much of this has to do with the evolution of the virus. A dead host cannot spread the virus as well as a live one. If the virus has a very high death rate, it will kill the host too quickly before it can spread. The longer the person lives with the virus, the longer they can spread it. Thus there is a stong pressure for the virus not to kill the host quickly.

Its somewhat both. Since you are downloading files off of limewire, there is always the chance that you could download a virus or trogan. But that chance is very slim as long as you watch what you are downloading. Make certain anything you are downloading is a MP3, MPEG, AVI or WAV or some other form of media file. Ive used it for years, as far as i know ive never got a virus from it. But there always is the slight chance it could happen.

But really, you stand the risk of downloading a virus everytime you flip on your computer and start surfing around the net. The best thing you can do is make certain you have a good and up to date anti-virus software running.

Most people hate these. The only people I can think that don't would be:

1) The creators of said software/techniques

2) The people who create applications to defend against these.

3) The people who support recovery from these.

Out of all of these, I find hackers and virus writers to be the most annoying. Adware and Spyware are pretty easily avoided with careful Internet browsing and not installing all those "free" applications available out there (i.e. only install trusted applications from reputable sources).

That's what an antivirus and a firewall are for. Now, routers with built in firewalls and antiviruses can detect and block them to a point. To be honest, the firewall usage from normal purchase routers are not all that strong. I recommend security for each computer that uses it.

If you have a SOHO(small office and home) router, I think most of them do not have such capabilities you mentioned. That depends on your system. If you have at least 1GB of memory and a modern processor, yes. If you have an older system, it will not be able to do anything well while a scan is running. It also depends on what kind of game you meant, like some online games would be fine, playing Half Life 2, that's another story. If you have a dual core processor, then absolutely you can do both at the same time. Also stay away from "urgent limewire update" and "hilarious prank call" or anything over 20 sharers, those are normally infected files.

The short answer is: yes.

Depending on where you live (here in the States, they definitely do). If you write a virus, and it's tracked back to you, you will do time. The FBI is in charge of investigating computer crimes, and they do a pretty decent job.

Other countries have their own law encforcement branches - they vary widely in their effectiveness.

Basically, if you write (not script kiddie stuff) a piece of malware, and it gets distributed, once it gets in the hands of the AV companies, they'll forward on any information they have to the FBI who'll use that information to find you.

I'm not saying that all of them get caught by any means, but if you have to ask the question, you'd most likely get caught.

For the most part the answer is going to be No.

Certainly there are laws against this malicious conduct and they can be prosecuted if they are caught.. but the likelihood of someone writing malicious code that can be traced is quite slim. There are those who seek credit and run their mouths which are probably the ones who have been caught. Loose lips do indeed sink ships :)

It probably will have come from the cds. Sony created the idea of a root kit and it was to stop piracy. The idea was that the root kit would run before you could access the cd in your computer and stop you from copying them. It kind of backfired when they didnt make it secure, so somebody hacked them to be malicious. At least you suspected the cds, as you would have had a reccuring problem if you played the cd after removing the rootkit, as it would just return.

What antivirus do you use.

AVG 7.5 free will alert you as viruses run because it scans everything as it runs. It will detect the rootkit before it can do any harm.

Hopefully the rootkit was from the cds, as long as they are the originals.

Hmm. Well I design virus' for server companies (Legally as a test on there security - I get paid for it). It is slightly dangerous but not too damaging. I doubt it will have come in with those CD's unless they are illigal pirate copies. Anyway I reccommend you remove it just incase it does anything bad. It is a virus which hides other virus'

Ashlee, putting your email address on a website isn't a great idea, it'll be picked up by spambots and you'll get more spam. If you have to do it, do it like this: stokes(at)hotmail.co.uk. Humans can recognise it but it's more of a problem for the spambots.

Yes, Macs can get Viruses and they are not actaully any more secure then a PC if you are using good Anti-Virus/Spyware protection and practice safe web browsing.

People "THINK" Macs can't get infected because there are just fewer threats out there for Macs. I can especially tell that it's running slow when I try to run audio or video apps. It stops, stutters, and sometimes even crashes. If it is that new and already gotten that bad , then I would recomend a reformat and reload
Definitely do the spyware thing, then go to Start-Run-type msconfig in the box. Choose the Startup Tab, and go through the list of programs that run every time you start your computer. Uncheck anything you know you don't need to be running all the time. Then close the utility and restart your computer. See if that helps.

You can use any of the AntiVirus (http://www.filehippo.com/software/antivi... listed, however, once a PC is infected there is no 100% gurantee that it could truly be cleaned with just Antivirus program.

If the your selected AV has completed the scan and cleanup and your PC is still slow or acting weird... more likely it has other malware that your AV cannot detect.

A safe bet - backup all your data on CD or DVD, and pull out your Restore CD/DVD and restore your PC to factory defaults. This is painful and could take a while but, hopeful that this would also wipe any malware added to your PC. This will give you a fresh start, also scan your backed up data on CD or DVD for viruses before copying them back to your PC.
