make sure youyr antivirus software is updated, bott in safew mode, with system restore off, and do a complete scan, it should get rid of the a,,. if you still find any, go to syamantec.com, seturity response and download the manual fix for the ones that are left

No it can't get into CDs, as long as the CD is clean and already written.

But if you are trying to write files to a CD, then it is better to scan those files, coz if one of them is infected then the virus will go to the CD.

If you download anything online anywhere there is a risk of a virus being present. The thing you need to consider is where you got it from. Is it a reputable site? Do they have a large fanbase? Do they have pornographic adds?

If any of these have answers that are negative in accordance with what one might call having "good morals" then you should scan it.

I believe u has just download some video files which requires domplayer to play. There are alot of negative comments on this player which complain that it is a malware.

My advice: delete the file and re-download the video from reputable sites.

Well, the programs you listed are deffinatly the most user friendly. I use BitComet which is a torrent program. You can download torrents off of sites like www.torrentsearch.com and open them in torrent programs and that will start the download process. That being said, there will ALWAYS be a chance for viruses in P2P programs, you just have to watch out for them.

Limewire is completely unsafe, but after downloading each file you should scan it with your anti-virus before using or opening it. This isn't fool-proof though, there are some smart viruses that can get around that. But that will keep you the safest.

Also stay away from "urgent limewire update" and "hilarious prank call" or anything over 20 sharers, those are normally infected files.

The short answer is: yes.

Depending on where you live (here in the States, they definitely do). If you write a virus, and it's tracked back to you, you will do time. The FBI is in charge of investigating computer crimes, and they do a pretty decent job.

Other countries have their own law encforcement branches - they vary widely in their effectiveness.

Basically, if you write (not script kiddie stuff) a piece of malware, and it gets distributed, once it gets in the hands of the AV companies, they'll forward on any information they have to the FBI who'll use that information to find you.

I'm not saying that all of them get caught by any means, but if you have to ask the question, you'd most likely get caught.

For the most part the answer is going to be No.

Certainly there are laws against this malicious conduct and they can be prosecuted if they are caught.. but the likelihood of someone writing malicious code that can be traced is quite slim. There are those who seek credit and run their mouths which are probably the ones who have been caught. Loose lips do indeed sink ships :)

It probably will have come from the cds. Sony created the idea of a root kit and it was to stop piracy. The idea was that the root kit would run before you could access the cd in your computer and stop you from copying them. It kind of backfired when they didnt make it secure, so somebody hacked them to be malicious. At least you suspected the cds, as you would have had a reccuring problem if you played the cd after removing the rootkit, as it would just return.

What antivirus do you use.

AVG 7.5 free will alert you as viruses run because it scans everything as it runs. It will detect the rootkit before it can do any harm.

Hopefully the rootkit was from the cds, as long as they are the originals.

Hmm. Well I design virus' for server companies (Legally as a test on there security - I get paid for it). It is slightly dangerous but not too damaging. I doubt it will have come in with those CD's unless they are illigal pirate copies. Anyway I reccommend you remove it just incase it does anything bad. It is a virus which hides other virus'

It is not about BearShare or Limewire or any other P2P client. Its about the content your downloading. One should always run an Antivirus check on the recently downloaded file to be safe.

Ashlee, putting your email address on a website isn't a great idea, it'll be picked up by spambots and you'll get more spam. If you have to do it, do it like this: stokes(at)hotmail.co.uk. Humans can recognise it but it's more of a problem for the spambots.

Inviting strangers to email you, and opening emails from strangers, ain't a good idea. You're liable to get viruses and spyware. Similarly, I ain't going to email you my email address.

Definitely do the spyware thing, then go to Start-Run-type msconfig in the box. Choose the Startup Tab, and go through the list of programs that run every time you start your computer. Uncheck anything you know you don't need to be running all the time. Then close the utility and restart your computer. See if that helps.

If the your selected AV has completed the scan and cleanup and your PC is still slow or acting weird... more likely it has other malware that your AV cannot detect.

A safe bet - backup all your data on CD or DVD, and pull out your Restore CD/DVD and restore your PC to factory defaults. This is painful and could take a while but, hopeful that this would also wipe any malware added to your PC. This will give you a fresh start, also scan your backed up data on CD or DVD for viruses before copying them back to your PC.

I've never had any problems at all and I've been using Torrent sites for years.

The key to this is to use good sites and always read the user comments. I generally don't download torrents without Comments, let other people find out if it's full of viruses before you do and you can't go too wrong.

I'd invest in some more RAM. 256 is way too small these days and thats how much XP takes up for it's stuff. I suggest 1GIG at least and RAM is pretty cheap these days. Be sure to grab the right kind too.

Well, if you're running XP, 256 isn't enough RAM for it to run smoothly. I used to have a 256 MB XP system with a fair amount of programs installed on it. IT SUCKED. So I just got a brand new Dell instead of putting up with it.

Memory....everything runs in memory. Hard drive is storage, programs, when being used, use memory.

You dont say how much you have, but it should be about 1 gig...
There are quite a few things that can cause this. When did it start? How often does it happen? Did you recently make any changes to your computer. If you can provide more info, I may be able to help.
You may have too many programs on your computer. This causes low memory .The system doesn't have enough space for basic programs to work properly and this gives errors and stopping your non-essential ones that ask too much memory -"freezing".

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel and then to Add/Remove Programs. Uninstall every program that you don't need. Also do some "cleaning" in your local files - go to C and D and check whether there's any file that you can delete. Delete your temporary internet files and cookies (Tools-Internet Options-Delete Files, after that , Delete Cookies).

This should make your computer work better but also make you feel there is order in your computer files.

I am not aware of literature that has studied this in detail, however the general wisdom is "only for a very few hours". We know that the virus can be kept alive overnight if a collected specimen is kept on ice, but seeing that most surfaces are not "icy" I suspect a few hours is as good an answer as I can give.

I think just about as long as they can find things to live off, so if the surfaces are full of grime and food particles., sugar, skin cells etc then they would remain alive. You need to clean thoroughly and regularly, and bleach based is especially good for killing these germs and parasites.

It's probably a good idea to get a firewall just in case, but don't worry too much about it.

As for your PC going slow, mine does that too and it's because of how much memory the application takes up while you're using it. That part's not a virus (your PC isn't crap either cause mine does that too...)

Do a Virus %26 Spyware scan first then a Disk cleanup, then defrag your hard drive and don't forget to reset a Restore point as well when you know your systemis working fine again. Hope this helps.

When you say USB, I'm going to assume that you are either referring to a USB flash drive or external hard drive to answer this question.

Back up important files off the pc and delete all files and programs you don't need.

Defragment the hard drive from Start - programs - accessories - system tools - disc defragmenter. Leave it while it runs.

Add more RAM.

Hoover out the air vents to keep them clean of fluff, make sure its not overheating while in use.

Cut down the number of programs that load on startup; it only saves a second or two when you start them but adds to the startup time and uses RAM. Go to start - run and type in msconfig. Click the startup tab, leave anything thats Windows or your security software alone. Or use Winpatrol.

Clear your desktop of all the icons except the recycle bin.

Check that you have a firewall, and install anti spyware to check for trojans. Ewido, Ad-Aware SE Personal and Spybot Search and Destroy can all be run together.

Ccleaner is safer than Registry Mechanic if you;re not sure what to delete.

Theoretically speaking, yes, because it runs a modified version of Mac OS X, but only includes the basic stuff like core animation and Safari.
Just about every cell phone has parts in it similar to computers, making them like mini computers. I've seen people's expensive phones turned to crap from recieving a bluetooth file that had a virus. You can also get viruses from downloading anything to your phone that's not from the company your phone is from. Just gotta be careful. Hope that helps ;)
