Virus is a program that can replicates itself by copying itself to other executable code (programs) or documents.

Viruses are not always directly harmful, they do not always erases or corrupt data, some of them simply display messages or slow down a PC by harvesting a computer resources (processor, memory, etc).

Some virus analyst groups named them, each group may have different naming convention. Some of the well known groups are Kaspersky, Symantec, etc. These groups usually are also an antivirus company.

However, a basic rule is that computer viruses cannot directly damage hardware, but only software.
