Back up important files off the pc and delete all files and programs you don't need.

Defragment the hard drive from Start - programs - accessories - system tools - disc defragmenter. Leave it while it runs.

Add more RAM.

Hoover out the air vents to keep them clean of fluff, make sure its not overheating while in use.

Cut down the number of programs that load on startup; it only saves a second or two when you start them but adds to the startup time and uses RAM. Go to start - run and type in msconfig. Click the startup tab, leave anything thats Windows or your security software alone. Or use Winpatrol.

Clear your desktop of all the icons except the recycle bin.

Check that you have a firewall, and install anti spyware to check for trojans. Ewido, Ad-Aware SE Personal and Spybot Search and Destroy can all be run together.

Ccleaner is safer than Registry Mechanic if you;re not sure what to delete.

Delete/uninstall some of your high RAM games. Or other apps that take up memory/HD space. Get a new one with a bigger drive?
