Could i get harmful viruses from clicking on links to other websites?

You bet...you don't even have to be browsing the web, remote attacks are possible the instant you connect to the internet. And there are plenty of kids and spammers out there with nothing better to do than look for machines to attack. You can minimize your chances of infection by:

- installing good anti-virus, anti-trojan and anti-spyware software on your computer (e.g. mcafee, adaware, hijackthis etc)

- use a browser (e.g. firefox) that isn't full of security holes

- set your browser security settings to a higher level

- make sure you're using a good firewall. Windows has one built-in, but it's not as secure as a properly configured router or some of the third-party firewalls that are provided with anti-virus software.

- stay away from porn and warez sites, these tend to be more likely to try and install things on your computer without your knowledge

Browsing the web is like having sex...there's no such thing as 100% protection, but you can do a lot to reduce the element of risk.

No you cant. Most people people get them from running dodgy files. There are heaps of free programs around the place that have inbuilt trojans. There are even "anti-virus" programs that download their own viruses. Its a mulimillion dollar industry,
