Why do people send computer viruses? And why do people still open those email, links, etc?

It's all about making money.

Perhaps Eugene Kaspersky, founder of anti-virus maker Kaspersky Labs said it best, " It's a different world today. 10 years ago, we were fighting against smart kids who hacked as a hobby. Now, we're dealing with criminal gangs that control your computer to make money. Different world, different protections."

As like why do people smoke and why are there still people who stays around the smoke
People who release computer viruses do so for the same reason that other vandals trash their neighbor's stuff; because they can and it gives them a cheap thrill of power to destroy or wreck something.

People open the links, etc. because of the old adage "there's a sucker born every minute". Sometimes the "sucker" is just a newbie who hasn't learned yet how to keep safe, or someone in a hurry who has overlooked a warning sign.

And sometimes those viruses can sneak onto your system without you doing anything overtly to allow it. They don't all arrive by email.
