There are a handful, at most, of what could be called viruses for the Mac OS X platform. However, they are simply not as effective, and never can be, as viruses for Windows XP. This is down to the way the system is written. You have distinct layers of the OS - the user only uses the top layer of it all and has to enter passwords specifically to access anything that could be damaged.
So, due to this protection, a user would have to purposefully allow the virus onto their machine.
Secondly, the apple market is much smaller than that held by Microsoft with its Windows platform, so there is less reason to create a virus in the first place - why create something to attack Mac's when the same effort could be expended making one that attacks many more machines.
One caveat here though is that complacency is a bad idea. We should not be sitting there trusting anything and everything we come across on the net - as this may well lead to virus problems.
Are there really no viruses for Mac's? Why not?nortin
I reckon the Mac producers are the ones unleashing the viruses on their rival company.. Or maybe its the Anti Virus companies.. lol
Are there really no viruses for Mac's? Why not?pc security
yes there are there are just fewer of them there were only 14 written for macs last year up from 3 the yar before compare that to 2500 written for windos
Why bother writing a virus for an inherently more secure operating system that actually stops malicious code from running unbidden (unlike Windoze). OS X is unix based don't forget. (Yes, that's Unix, not Linux. Big difference.)
